Initially created as Catherine’s private art collection, the museum gradually grew through purchases and donations during the tsarist era and opened to the public in 1852. The museum consists of six historic buildings in total, led by the Winter Palace, dazzling with its baroque architecture. These buildings host not only works of art but also the glorious past of the Russian Empire. Especially the capture of the Winter Palace during the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution became one of the most symbolic moments in Russian history. The Hermitage collection includes works by masters of world art such as Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rubens, Van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso. Archaeological artifacts from ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations also attract great interest. With over approximately 3 million works, the Hermitage is not just a museum, but a cultural temple where art and history intertwine. It offers every visitor the grandeur of the past and humanity’s artistic heritage. After the tour, we continue with Peter and Paul Fortress. Built by Peter in the 1700s in St. Petersburg, the fortress is located on the Neva River.
